Bromo is an active volcano in East Java, Indonesia, located in the Tengger Mountains. At 2,329 meters (7,641 feet), it is not the highest peak in the massif, but it is the most famous. The area is one of East Java’s most popular tourist destinations, and the volcano is part of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. Bromo is derived from the Javanese pronunciation of Brahma, the Hindu god of creation. Mount Bromo is located in the “Sea of Sand” nature reserve (Javanese: Segara Wedi or Indonesian: Lautan Pasir), which has been protected since 1919.
Mount Bromo is usually reached via the nearby mountain village of Cemoro Lawang. It takes about 45 minutes to walk to the volcano from there, or you can take an organized jeep tour that includes stops at the Mount Penanjakan viewpoint (2,770 m (9,500 ft)) (Indonesian: Gunung Penanjakan). The attractions of Mount Penanjakan can also be reached on foot in about two hours.
Madakaripura Waterfall is a waterfall in East Java’s Probolinggo District. This 200-meter-tall waterfall is Java’s tallest and Indonesia’s second-tallest. This waterfall is located in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, specifically on the slopes of Mount Bromo. Madakaripura Waterfall is located at the end of a narrow valley and is shaped like a niche surrounded by steep cliffs that drip water as if it were raining; three of these cliffs even poured water down to form another waterfall.
The waterfall’s name, which is 1,000 meters above sea level, is derived from the word Madakaripura, which refers to Mahapatih Gajah Mada’s fief land in the Majapahit kingdom. The Madakaripura Waterfall is also known as the Eternal Waterfall. This is because the volume of water flowing from this waterfall never decreases and is always abundant.
Tumpak Sewu, also known as Coban Sewu, is a waterfall in East Java, Indonesia, located between the Pronojiwo District in the Lumajang Regency and the Ampelgading District in the Malang Regency. Semeru, Java’s highest mountain and an active volcano, obscures the waterfall. The waterfall’s primary water source is the Glidik River, which flows down Semeru. Tumpak Sewu roughly translates to “a thousand waterfalls” in Javanese. The name most likely refers to the appearance of multiple waterfalls in a single, semicircular area.
Tumpak Sewu is a popular weekend destination for tourists. Although the construction of infrastructure around and within the main box canyon has made it easier to access the area, the journey to enter or exit is still physically demanding and can take up to an hour.
The Ijen volcano complex is a group of composite volcanoes in East Java, Indonesia, near the Banyuwangi and Bondowoso regencies. The Ijen volcano, located west of Gunung Merapi, has a turquoise-colored acidic crater lake one kilometer (0.62 miles) wide. The lake is the site of a labor-intensive sulfur mining operation, in which sulfur-laden baskets are carried from the crater floor by hand. The work is well compensated in comparison to the cost of living in the area, but it is physically demanding. Workers earn about US$13 per day and must transport sulfur chunks three kilometers to the nearby Paluding Valley to be compensated.
Sukamade beach is roughly 97 kilometers southwest of Banyuwangi. It is a beautiful, tranquil, natural setting that is part of the 50,000-hectare Meru Betiri National Park. Turtles lay eggs on Sukamade beach nearly every night of the year. Because the site is obviously of global importance, the overworked park rangers protect it 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The rangers take some eggs to protect them from human and animal predators. The eggs are incubated in the park’s hatchery before being released into the sea from the same beach where they were laid. There are other beaches within the park’s boundaries that are comparable, but the turtles appear to prefer Sukamade.
The turtle population’s stability has been aided by a system of careful tagging and monitoring, as well as the use of special hatcheries. On a moonlit night, watching these massive creatures emerge from the surf and struggle up the beach to lay their eggs is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will ensure Sukamade’s continued prominence. This is off the beaten path and takes some effort to get to, but it is well worth it.
The Semeru volcano is an active volcano in Indonesia’s East Java province. In this region, the Indo-Australian plate subducts beneath the Eurasia plate. This is the tallest mountain on the island of Java. The name “Semeru” is derived from Meru, the Hindu world’s central mountain, or Sumeru, the home of the gods. This stratovolcano is also known as Mahameru, which means “Great Mountain” in Sanskrit. It is one of the most popular hiking destinations in Indonesia.
Semeru rises dramatically above the eastern Java coastal plains. Maars with crater lakes have formed in a line across the summit of the volcano. It formed south of the overlapping Ajek-ajek and Jambagan calderas. The eruption’s by products are andesitic. Semeru is the southernmost volcano in the Tengger Volcanic Complex. The eruptions of Semeru have a long history. At least 55 eruptions of lava flows and pyroclastic flows have been recorded since 1818. (11 of which resulted in fatalities).
